IllumIKnation Station Grassroots Education welcomes each of you to join your brothers and sisters in learning about subjects that you care about! We are very excited to provide return to Creatures of the Night Festival to host educational workshops. This is our 1st time in Tennessee, where IllumIKnation Station Grassroots Education is excited to share education!

Workshops will be located at the IllumIKnation Station workshop dome. Look for workshops in 3 distinct spaces, all located together, as marked on your event map!

 We are a grassroots group that travels around to music festivals and other events promoting education, exploration, community, and making a difference in the world. Our presenters are volunteers like YOU who want to share their knowledge, and our topics are as varied as your interests! Upcycling is reusing things often considered trash to create new and useful things. In this workshop, learn about how to recycle plastic bags into plarn, or plastic yarn. Learn about the process of creating bags and other items from this up-cycled plastic!

 

How to Wrap Hair

I like big hair buns, and I cannot lie! Learn to create hair wraps of various colors and patterns using string and hemp cords. Come to have your hair wrapped or to wrap someone else’s hair. If you’re feeling ambitious, you might even try doing both!

 

Fermentation 101

For thousands of years humans have enjoyed the benefits of fermentation. This process is used in nearly every culture to brew drinks, prepare dishes, and preserve foods. Come learn about all things fermentation with discussion of on wild bacteria, yeast, and the overall process. It’s magic! Discussion will includes fermentation of Kimchi, Kombucha, pickles, pickled beets, jalapenos, yogurt, and more. Our presenter is an avid homebrewer and will also touch on fermentation of beer and wine!

 

How to Make a Paper Bag Mushroom

Who doesn’t love to see mushrooms sprouting up, beautifying the area? Well you can be the one who brings the toadstool love. In this craft-shop, you can make your own mushrooms with paper bags and paint. Create them in various sizes and colors. Then, enjoy placing them whimsically around the park on wooden stakes. Make a mushroom pop up where YOU want to see one!

 

Growing a Medicinal Herb Garden

Our experienced presenter will share tricks of the trade learned over a decade of gardening, imparting the basics of planning and implementing a medicinal herb garden. Home-grown herbs are known to possess numerous salubrious qualities and may assist in the body’s natural regenerative processes.

 

Balancing the Heart: The Dynamics of Love and Fear

This Levity Worthshop is an exploration of the dynamics of love and fear without a judgmental overlay. By looking at humans as celestial beings with the energetic properties of planets, galaxies, apples and so much more. We see a pattern forming that puts a new perspective on the Chakra energy system. Instead of a vertical alignment of energy centers, a two-source energy system presents itself. By developing non-judgment we can look at love and fear as bright and deep energy sources and open up these two energy channels. Exercises in this Worthshop will help participants to integrate these seemingly opposite emotions and connect to the universal energy within both Love and Fear. Psychedelic Philosophy 101

The Pyschedelic Philosophy will examine some of the common themes of thought inspiried by psychedelics, giving consideration to the validity of positions held. An experienced psychonaught, our presenter will address the deeper questions of life: what is its very nature? Why do we even exist? as well as looking at the darker side of potential non-existent realities. Perhaps you have asked such questions, but shied away from the answers the mind reaches toward.

 

Perennial Vegetables and Food Forests

This workshop will be presented by a curator and botanist of the Sarasota Succulent Society, a botanical garden in Sarasota, Florida; it will include an introduction of the concept of agroforestry, i.e. combining agricultural and forestry techniques to create more productive, healthy, and sustainable land-systems, as well as an attempt to persuade the audience and the public at large of the need for an agricultural revolution in modern society.

Rythmm Stick Flow: Devil and Flower Sticks

Devil and Flower Sticks – Come join the fun of rythmn sticks. Also known as Devil and Flower sticks, this form of object manipulation is a flow art utilizing 2 hand-sticks to juggle and balance a baton. Come learn the basics with our practice sticks, or bring your own to learn some tricks! You can learn to play with simple spins, tosses, and more. Our experienced presenter has been working with these flow tools for over 15 years.

 

Acro Yoga Roots for Beginners

Acrobalance is a therapeutic practice that combines yoga, acrobatics, and strength training wherein one partner balances on the other. This practice requires careful communication and intentional connection with a partner. This is a beginner class that encourages students to push their boundaries as we get off the ground for the first time. Prepare to build confidence, strength, and mutual trust as both your body and mind become more flexible!(Please bring a water bottle, yoga mat or blanket. Bringing a partner is encouraged but not required)

Bring your own hand drums and participate in or observe this drum circle. We’ll cover the proper way to strike common hand drums. For the benefit of the rhythmically challenged, our presenter will demonstrate the how, where and when to beat the drums. Communication in drum circles will also be discussed.

 

Flow Arts & Freewriting Workshop (Therapy for PTSD and more)

Learn the process that helped Amber, a Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom 2014, find peace with herself- flow arts and freewriting. Fellow veterans and patrons alike are encouraged to bring their flow arts which include poi, rope dart, lotus fans, wands, staffs, and more. The program will start with a relaxation session that moves into a flow session to help participants find energetic connection with their bodies, their minds, and each other through flow skills and techniques. Then, there will be a free writing about whatever is holding you back that you would like to flow through and make peace with.Myself and assistant Alexis Henry will offer support to whom request it.

Come learn about the power of your mind to create meaning from nothingness, delving into discussion and inspired art. When presented with visual aids such as an image or a conglomeration of images in an abstracted composition yielding an asymmetrical/symmetrical layout one may find the concepts/ideas they conclude about what they say they may see within the Rorschach are entirely personal, while other instances shared experiences are possible as well. The Principles of Gestalt Psychology also play a role in our visual spectrum & what we may come to terms with in our past, present & future experiences when utilized in the creative processes being used.

This is a beginning level class in staff dancing and manipulation. You will learn how to become more comfortable in making the staff an extension of your body. Development of style and character is the name of this game. Learn the basics of spinning, rolls, contact juggling, and more! Our presenter is a fire instructor out of Nashville TN with years of experience. Extra staffs will be provided, but feel free to bring your own.

 

Intro to Juggling

An accomplished juggler will present the basics of the art of juggling. While juggling has been used by athletes in countless sports to improve their hand-eye coordination, it can also be a satisfying pursuit in its own right. Come learn all about poi flower patterns. Poi can create many unique and complicated patterns. In this workshop our presenter will guide you through introductory and intermediate compound circles. Often called flowers, these spirograph-like patterns are created by making a circlue motion with the arm while the ball makes a circiular motiona around teh hand. Based on releative direction of the arm versus poi and the ratio of rotations between them, many different designs can be created. Our presenter has come from Athens GA to share his 5 years of experience.

Human history shows the value long placed on the power of opposites. This workshops will discuss how oposites create balance; the hermetic unification of polarities. Here are the twin pillars of the gateway into the sacred temple. In the center is the union, the middle pillar of the Tree of Life. This is a multi-faceted workshop comprising both an introduction to rune stones and their usage from Viking to modern times, as well as an examination of palmistry. Learn to make your own rune stones from bakeable clay and fluorescent paints; then learn the basics of casting before delving into the intracicies of palm reading.

Come lease about establishing Sustainable Sanctuaries from AEON (Ancient Exchanges Of Nature), the outreach aspect of Faerie Hill ecovillage. This sustainable educational and experimental community includes sustainable housing, wind/solar power, organic gardens, and more! Discussion will include permaculture and edible landscapes, cooperative lifestyles, self-sufficient ecovillages, alternative building techniques and materials, composting and grey water recovery systems, home and community solar and wind power, co-creating communities and land trusts.

I Choose a Life I Love Living

Raised in community, Maurice Legendre has been immersed in the complex emotional dynamics of group human interaction since he was a child. This experience helped him to realize that happiness comes from self-awareness and expression not universal truth. Yet at the same time he was overwhelmed by the dysfunction and persistence of fear, judgment and violence in the world. This lead Maurice to be personally fascinated with the process of how to create a peaceful heart and vibrant human culture and he has been writing on the subject for over 10 years. His first book; I Choose A Life I Love Living, is an introduction to happy and healthy living through self-awareness. In this workshop you’ll enjoy a basic overview of dream psychology and learn about the main principles of dream psychology. Come unlock the significance of your own dreams, and their relation to your life. A group discussion will be followed with a writing exercise about dreams.

Spiritual Beat Boxing

Sirius Colors (Thomas Orr Anderson, M.A.) is a musician, physicist, inventor and sound therapist. Thomas earned his masters degree in physics studying the information storage capacities of space-time in the context of black holes and holograms. He has done extensive research in the fields of sound and vibration including investigations of the acoustics of sacred geometries and ancient temples. He travels the world studying with indigenous earth-wisdom masters and integrates their guidance into the music of Sirius Colors. Thomas has trained intensively in the ancient arts of Qi Gong and acupressure and travels to Mexico regularly to participate in sacred ceremonies, where he is currently an apprentice of a 101 yr-old Yaqui-Mayan medicine man. The Rope Dart is was originally an ancient Chinese weapon from the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 AD), but in the United States today it is better know as the ‘flaming rope’ fire toy. Still well over 9 feet, the bladed tip has been replaced by a reservoir for fuel, turning a weapon into an awesome fire display! This workshop will cover beginning rope-dart techniques and related theory. It is not necessary to bring or even own a rope-dart tool to come learn how to handle one.

Intro to Fire Eating

This workshop is an introduction to fire eating workshop. We will start by going over the different fuels out there and which ones are safe and credible to use for fire eating, as well as basic fire safety. The next step of this class is getting comfortable with the flame, by introducing “fleshing” and fuel tracing. By the end of this class you will have eaten fire and learned the techniques behind doing so successfully. These are the fundamentals of fire eating however depending on how the class goes, we will venture into more advanced tricks.

This will involve a focus on teaching basic movements, and the science behind human range of motion, prop manipulation, and the sacred geometry that can be achieved through them. This will be an all props workshop (poi, double staff, hoops, etc) and it will adhere to Vulcan Tech Gospel guidelines (this is basically our bible and technical language in the flow world).
